Study: Overnight Supplemental Oxygen In Patients With Sleep Apnea Decreases Blood Pressure

Oxygen Was Added To The Air In The CPAP Machines And Also Increased The Level Of Blood Oxygen

According to a study, obstructive sleep apnea sufferers can also decrease their blood pressure by receiving supplemental oxygen at night. Sleep apnea results in several health complications, such as a decrease in blood oxygen due to the interruptions in breathing, which lowers the oxygen supply to the brain and increases the workload of the heat, since it has to make an extra effort to distribute poorly oxygenated blood to the body, increasing blood pressure. The normal treatment for sleep apnea consists in the use of CPAP machines to force air to the lungs, avoiding the interruption of breathing. Researchers added overnight supplemental oxygen in the CPAP machines, which resulted in a decrease of the morning blood pressure. The study also showed an increase in the amount of oxygen in the blood. Additional information click here.
